A police officer has died after being hit by a lorry while assisting at the scene of a crash, in a double tragedy that also claimed the life of the motorist.
North Yorkshire Police constable Rosie Prior, 45, and motorist Ryan Welford, 41, were both standing on the A19 at Bagby, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, when they were struck by the lorry. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
A teenage boy, who had been a passenger in the motorist’s car and was standing on the verge alongside Prior and Welford, is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
Prior had been aiding the 41-year-old and the teenager following an earlier collision when the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) struck.
The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old man from Berwick-upon-Tweed, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
